Springer Action Today On Newtyle
Here's Raymond Leary playing a very lively Tay springer in the Alder's Pool this afternoon on his fly rod. These springers give a great account of themselves especially when they are hooked on the fly as you can see here in this short video clip. Next week should produce more of these superb springers and there are a few rods still available to let. To book a rod on the Newtyle Beat Click here.

Kelt Action On Newtyle Today
I was sure at first that I was into a small springer when I saw the beautiful silver flanks and felt the power of this well mended cock kelt today. It's great to see a kelt at this advanced stage of recovery following the rigours of winter spawning. You can see why it's sometimes very difficult for a new fisher to know the difference between a kelt & a springer when they catch a lovely silver fish like this one. Jock's Fly Warming Up Today
Here's one of my favourite spring tube flies giving itself a warm up at the side of 'The Trap' just before being swum through the pool this afternoon. Notice the lovely waggle off the tinsel and fox wing. This pattern has a black, orange & yellow wing with a gold body, yellow hackle and plenty flashy stuff through the wing and some nice jungle cock cheeks and a red head. It's all about faith and this hybrid pattern has my vote at this time of year.

Here's the water level at 3 pm this afternoon. It was exactly 2 ft on the gauge at 9 am so there must have been some hydro generation today to lift the river a few inches. We saw springers pushing through the beat first thing this morning but nothing hooked today (so far).

'Selkie' on Gaurd Duty Today
Here's 'Selkie' standing guard over his master's favourite high water fly stream in the Cottar pool on the Newtyle beat. This is the most delightful stream to put a fly through in higher water conditions. Most salmon that come through the Cottar pool when the river is high come up this side of the river and settle in this stream for a breather.

Here's Newtyle fisher Allan Rennie with his perfect 22 lbs sea-liced Tay springer. The fish was caught in 'The Steps' pool around 3.30pm and took a pearly pink tomic lure from the boat. There were also springers moving through the beat just before lunchtime today and one of our bank rods lost a fine fish just above 'The Boil' on the fly. Newtyle Beat Water Gauge (Today)
As you can see the water is back up again today and with it has come some very blustery conditions which are mean't to stay for a few days. I am not the type who ever lets poor weather conditions put me off especially at this time of year when there's fresh run springers in the system (who do not read the same fishing books as we do !!!). Having seen salmon caught in all types of weather I'm quietly optimistic for the next few days. For more information or to book a rod on the Newtyle Beat Click here.

Thank goodness that the water has dropped back to 6ft again after the huge weekend water levels.
