Kindallachan Pool Kinnaird Beat River Tay

Here's another great holding pool on the Kinnaird beat of the River Tay. Many salmon are caught here each year and the depth of the middle of the pool coupled with the fast flowing neck create a great lie for salmon in low water levels.

Cock Salmon Kelt Carcass

Here's the carcass of a heavyweight cock salmon washed up on the riverbank at Kinnaird on the Tay. This fine salmon would have weighed approx 25lbs while in his prime. It's good to see true heavyweight Tay salmon genetics are still at large in the River Tay,

Here's Matt Duffy with his first ever salmon on his first day salmon fishing. This perfect salmon was taken an hour ago from the superb Ash Trees pool on the Lower Kinnaird beat of the Tay.

Rhino Stone River Findhorn

Here's the famous Rhino Stone on the River Findhorn which is a great visual water height marker easily viewable from Dulsie Bridge en route to the various local salmon beats. The River Findhorn is one of Scotland's finest salmon rivers.

Here's a panoramic video of the Tay this afternoon in all her glory. The river has settled nicely since the recent floods and Spring salmon will soon start appearing in these pools. This is the famous Junction Pool on the Lower Kinnaird beat where the Tummel (top right) meets the Tay (top left). This particular pool comes into a class of it's own from late March onwards each season. Ash Trees Pool Lower Kinnaird River Tay

Here's the neck of the Ash Trees Pool on Lower Kinnaird. There are lovely beats on the Tay with classic fly pools which are a delight to swing a fly through. Then you get the rare combination of having the above but on 'real' holding water too. In the days when Calum Gillies was the head ghillie on this beat the Lower Kinnaird fishing hut was located on this very pool close to where this shot was taken. Lower Kinnaird Beat River Tay

Here's Jim Tritton (Lower Kinnaird Beat Ghillie) at full throttle heading down the Tay today. The river is looking more and more settled after the recent high water and should start seeing a few springers move in the next few weeks.

River Tummel River Tay Junction Pool

This is where the Tummel greets the Tay and a very productive salmon fishing pool this is.
In a few months this pool will be full of Spring salmon. Good to see a more settled river today after the very high water levels of recent weeks.

The Tay Western Catchment Project

This essential and colossal River Tay headwater evaluation has just been successfully completed. The areas that the survey covered on the Tay system are the areas where many Spring salmon reproduce in and where their offspring must thrive before heading off to sea. This particular run of salmon is not as abundant in the Tay these days and this survey has flagged up many issues that must now be addressed in the headwaters. It is important that people understand that there is a huge difference between good water quality and good salmon reproduction habitats. One is simply of no use without the other. Many people point the fingure at ocean mortality being the main reason for declines in salmon numbers but how on earth can you point the finger at what goes on at sea whithout having your own back yard in good order. My non scientific thoughts would be that to regenerate and multiply a dwindling run of salmon you must assist with their environment for spawning and the growing on of the juvenile fish to simply maximize the smolt output to sea. This is a numbers game we are playing like most things in nature. It also helps if you protect them which to the best of my knowledge is now mainly being done on the Tay. The River Spey Today

Here's the River Spey in big water conditions today after the rain and mild weather which has caused much of the Cairngorm mountain's snow to melt. This most perfect labrador is Kudu of Kinrara.
