Here's a classic shot of my late father Donald Monteith being escorted off the promenade by a member of the Royal National Lifeboat Institute in Portpatrick (where he lived) during the storms that hit Scotland in the late 90's. A local photographer grabbed this shot which was then picked up by the 'Sunday Times' and ended up on the front page !!!

7 lbs Salmon Landed Today On Newtyle
Here's top angler Bill Henry with the 1st of 3 salmon landed today on Newtyle. This salmon was caught in our 'Island Pool' on the stroke of lunchtime and quickly released. Bill had a further 2 grilse in 'The Boil' in the afternoon. Very well done Bill on your very first visit to the beat. For more information on the Newtyle Beat Click here.

Martin Ritchie On Newtyle
Here's my great friend and former Tay District Salmon Fishery Board hatchery manager Martin Ritchie taking 'Selkie' for a spin in the new boat this afternoon. Martin who used to ghillie on Newtyle currently works for the Tweed board and called in today for a few hours on his way up to the Park Beat of the Dee where he is fishing tomorrow.

Cottar Stream From The Island Today
Here's a panoramic video of the Cottar stream (& Selkie !) taken from the middle of the river. This is another classic low water fly stream on Newtyle and many salmon are taken here opposite the clearing where the shallow stream tapers away into the deeper channel. For more information on the Newtyle Beat Click here.

Van Staal C-Vex Combo 9/12
In my opinion (having used one now for 3 years) this is the best production salmon fly reel available today. It's clever design gives you 2 sizes of salmon reel for the price of one. These are like hens teeth to get hold of and I was fortunate to take delivery of 2 of them from the States last week. This is absolute quality at it's best. For more information Click here.

Tail Of The Cottar Looking Downstream
Here's the wee croy just below our hut at the tail of the Cottar looking downstream to the Boil and beyond (click to enlarge). If you look closer you can see the water displacement that comes off the boulders that sit out in the middle of the river opposite this croy. This lie is a great low water summer hot spot as salmon that run up from the 'Boil' below love to stop here. Several fish were seen in this area yesterday. To the right of this picture you can see Willie 'the ghillie' Laird's wishing well in the garden. The dark water way down in the distance is the 'Steps' pool and the surface disturbance from the huge stones that sit all across this pool are clearly visible.

Salmon Action Today On The Newtyle Beat
Having hooked this salmon in the neck of the Trap I walked the fish down to the tail of the pool to play it in safety away for the big boulders where it was hooked. These videos are the tail end of the fight. This salmon took the 'jock's shrimp' fly which is a deadly wee orange & red shrimp pattern.

The Monteith Speycaster Salmon Fly line
This is an absolutely first rate Speyline which I developed myself due to my own personal frustration at being unable to find the perfect salmon fishing line. I have a limited quantity of these fly lines in stock in both 10/11 & 9/10 weights at a mere £40 each. This speyline is durable & flies beautifully. It was designed to turn over polyleaders (if added) where other floating lines struggle. Trust yer ghillie !!! For more information on this fine product Click here.

Neck Of The Cottar Pool Today
Here's a video of the beautiful stream at the neck of the Cottar pool taken in the lovely sunshine earlier today. Salmon at this time of year love to lie up in this area of the pool just on the outside edge of the rough water seen here in the foreground. This lie is easily covered by wading onto the little island seen here on the opposite bank. To book a rod on the Newtyle Beat Click here.

The Fiddler's Pool
Here's the top end of the Fiddlers Pool in low water showing the river bed almost all the way across to the far bank. This spot here is a good area for salmon to lie in when the river is running at 3 to 4 ft. In the Winter months much spawning occurs here in the perfect gravel in at the margins along this riverbank.

18 lbs Salmon Landed Yesterday On Newtyle
Here's a shot of artist Alistair Makinson's 18 lbs sea-licer that was hooked with his 6th cast at the 'Trap' yesterday morning. This fine specimen was quickly returned to the river after a powerful scrap which took him down through the rough water and into the Cottar pool below. Alistair (one of the Uk's top landscape artists) is helping with a fund raising initiative where his original oil paintings and prints can be purchased with a healthy percentage being donated by him to the Tay Western Catchments Project (1017 mile Tay headwater habitat initiative). Clearly a tussle on the fly with this fine specimen is richly deserved for all Alistair's help. Here's a link to the TWCP Blog which is an outstanding and daily updated blog showing shots & videos of what the surveyors are encountering up in the Tay's headwater rivers Lyon, Lochay & Dochart.
